Training for Drag

Image
So...enough about things that I really don't know much about. Let's talk about something I'm actually very knowledgeable in: fitness. Outside of the drag scene, I lead a very physical life. I work as a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor of many sorts, so I am constantly active, training clients, demonstrating exercises, and teaching classes.  I am also a competitive triathlete, which involves upwards of 10 hours of training per week to get race ready.  All of this takes a sizeable toll on my body. Throw in dropping it low on stage every few weeks, and at regular dance rehearsals, my knees, ankles, hips, back, feet...they all suffer the consequences. To help avoid injuries, there are a few things I do, and recommend others do as well. First: WARM THE FUCK UP!!! Most musculoskeletal injuries are, overall, not caused by an action itself, but by the body being unprepared for the action.  Pre-exercise or pre-performance stretching is not to loosen the mu...

My First Performance

Image
I am so pleased with my first performance! I wanted to showcase the multiple personalities of my drag character, and I think I did that with Greedy and Papi, two songs sung by incredibly talented ladies.  I also may have showcased just a little bit more skin than some, but hey, if you've got it flaunt it! Check out the video on youtube by Dragging Our Heels linked below: Rowena Whey - Greedy Thank-you to everyone who came out to support me and all of the other amazing queens who performed last night at the Sunday Review. I can't wait to show more of what I have to offer!

Step #7: Prepping your body and face

Shave off that unwanted body hair… …or don’t. Really it’s up to you and your character, but most queens try to be more feminine in body type, which means, shave off all of that male body hair. Chest hair, stomach hair, facial hair, back hair, leg hair, and even down there if you really want to. I do, but then again, if you’re going to do something, might as well go all the way with it. Halfway through the hair removal process. Bye bye otter. If you’re like me, and have some fur to manage, this step might take a while.   You might want to trim your hair down to skin level first. Have a nice warm shower to soften the hairs, and follow that with a nice clean shave using lots of shaving cream. For the smoothest result, go against the grain (this means shave upwards in most cases, not downwards).   To help prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs, rinse the shaved areas afterwards with cold water.   If you’re still prone to ingrown hairs you will probably be more comf...

Step #5: The sex is in the heel

Image
Girl, get a pair of heels, the higher the better. The sex is in the heel!! If you’re already a tall person, don’t worry!! No one will care if you tower over them because you will look fabulous!   A Queen does not wear flats. If you are new to walking in heels, get a pair with a wider heel, or a platform, as these will be more stable. If you love walking in heels, grab some stilettos and strut your stuff!! More importantly, practice walking in them. If you’re going to be dancing, practice dancing in them. The last thing you want is to twist your ankle, or worse, while out in drag. Walking note: Men walk stiffly, with little sway in the hips but a lot of sway in the shoulders. Women walk fluidly, gliding, with sway at the hips but little motion in the shoulders.   Record yourself walking, or have a friend record you walking so that you can see what you look like. This also applies to dancing. Men dance with more stops and starts, women tend to dance with more fluid,...
